How many of us are truly brave enough to push a house and gardens true potential when we have the opportunity? Our client’s passion invested in this project has delivered on all fronts.
In the heart of Hammersmith & Fulham, Garden Club London embarked on a transformative project to design and build a family garden that creates a seamless connection between a truly stunning interior, architecture, and outdoor spaces. The new design beautifully and bravely enhances the modern extension of the home, characterized by striking zigzag-shaped glass windows crafted by the architects at Bureau de Change. Our clients sought a serene and luxurious garden that would serve as a tranquil retreat for relaxation and recreation, fostering a deeper connection to nature.

Design
The garden design focused on developing various spaces, including a family garden, water feature and dining area, all complemented by bespoke features for practicality and visual interest. With careful consideration of all users requirements, the garden is the creation of multiple zones that offer diverse functionalities and vistas while addressing what can be done when a lawn is removed.
Various pathways meander both geometrically and naturally sweeping through the interior eye line from the incredible architecture and various seating areas, all clothed in greenery to a destination. These include the outdoor kitchen, waterside deck and sauna area, both of which create very different atmospheres.
Preparation and Build
With the majority of our projects we co-ordinate closely with the main contractor, architect and interior designer as appropriate plus all trades on site to ensure a completely seamless and best value for money approach to the project.
Specialist lifting equipment and additional labour were required for many of the hard landscape features, paving and water feature with tight access and a busy main road in front of the property.
This ‘no lawn’ garden is designed and built to be child and environment friendly with plenty of soft landings and permeability throughout the space. If you are a little perplexed by this it simply means that there is a lot of surfaced area for excess rainfall to soak away and permeate the ground, alleviating the pressure on drainage and limiting flood risk.

Planting
The planting in this garden is really fun and it is always more fun when our clients are involved and have their own list of must haves. As well as preserving some existing trees and shrubs a large part of the planting design was driven by the surrounding gardens slightly sub tropical feel and borrowing that view.
Seasonal interest has been carefully thought about whilst the stature and architectural form of evergreen plants including tender varieties of plants adds to the special atmosphere of this garden.
