In the heart of Hammersmith & Fulham, Garden Club London embarked on a transformative project to design and build a family garden that creates a seamless connection between a truly stunning interior, architecture, and outdoor spaces. The new design beautifully and bravely enhances the modern extension of the home, characterized by striking zigzag-shaped glass windows crafted by the architects at Bureau de Change. Our clients sought a serene and luxurious garden that would serve as a tranquil retreat for relaxation and recreation, fostering a deeper connection to nature.

Design

The garden design focused on developing various spaces, including a family garden, water feature and dining area, all complemented by bespoke features for practicality and visual interest. With careful consideration of all users requirements, the garden is the creation of multiple zones that offer diverse functionalities and vistas while addressing what can be done when a lawn is removed.

Preparation and Build

To achieve our vision, we crafted angular planters throughout the main garden, inspired by natural rock formations and the geometric lines of the home’s architecture. These planters were designed with ample room for root systems, enabling a rich tapestry of planting that evolves with the seasons. A large lawn, situated above the basement pool, guides visitors through lush planting toward a bespoke pavilion housing a high-spec outdoor kitchen, bar and dining area.

Planting

The design features a secluded adventure garden for children set amongst woodland ground cover planting, encouraging exploration and play. A series of small pathways guide visitors through the space, each providing a unique ambiance where planting overhangs and softens the hard landscape features. The stunning garden unfolds through a glazed wall, enhanced by a triple-height indoor and outdoor green wall, creating a breath-taking visual impact from the moment one enters the home. This garden ultimately balances practicality and beauty, serving as an ideal outdoor space for modern family living set amongst trees, flowering shrubs and seasonal all year-round interest.
