Design
Nestled near London Bridge, an area rich in history, lies a Georgian walled garden that serves as a serene sanctuary amid the bustling energy of the Borough market. Following a sensitive renovation of their impressive 1830s home, our clients sought to develop a garden design that maximised sunny areas for relaxation while also accommodating outdoor entertaining during the evenings. The challenge was to preserve the garden’s historical connection to the house while subtly updating it to reflect the owners’ love for fashion and vibrant colours. Furthermore, the design needed to include areas for children and dogs to play, as well as enhanced privacy along the lower garden boundaries.
The garden is primarily viewed from the first-floor kitchen, prompting us to strategically incorporate height to create a visually balanced vista. Access is provided from the side of the house, leading visitors through an inviting avenue of ‘tabletop’ trees that guide the eye into the garden. These trees foster a sense of cosiness and contribute to the atmosphere as you stroll along a clay brick path that meanders through a modern interpretation of a potager garden. The design showcases clean lines and structured block planting of lavender, rosemary, and thyme, releasing delightful scents that accompany you through the narrow pathways toward the main area.
Preparation and Build
The preparation and build process focused on maximising functionality while preserving the garden’s character. The seating area was meticulously designed to serve as a central feature, providing versatile options for lounging or dining. This approach eliminated the need for multiple seating zones, ultimately maximizing the sunny portions of the garden and allocating space for a real lawn where children and dogs can freely play.
We opted to retain the original walls in their raw state, showcasing the unique character of the various brick types and plasterwork that have evolved over the years. Handmade clay pavers in an elegant ebony finish were selected to complement the dark brickwork of the house, creating a moody backdrop that enhances the beauty of overhanging foliage and delicate seed heads.

Planting
The planting scheme is thoughtfully varied, featuring both shade-loving plants for the areas under an existing flowering cherry tree and sun-loving, drought-tolerant specimens. In keeping with the garden’s historical significance, we carefully retained and rehabilitated the old roses, ensuring their continued presence as a testament to the garden’s heritage.
As visitors enter the garden, they are immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of surprise and intrigue, encouraging exploration of the vibrant flowers and intricate details that adorn the space. The balanced layering of foliage and blooms fosters a seamless integration between the house and garden, transforming this inner-city plot into a true oasis. In the evenings, the garden exudes a magical ambiance that invites relaxation and enjoyment, enriching the overall experience of this remarkable sanctuary in the heart of the city.
