Roof with a view: Making the most of sweeping views above a converted Jam Factory

Transforming a rooftop into a garden oasis.

A comprehensive garden design ensures that this exposed panoramic roof top now perfectly blends aesthetics, durability and functionality.

Design

The challenge involved transforming a magnificent rooftop space characterized by sweeping panoramic views of London into a vibrant and functional garden. The previous landscaping had relied on softwood materials, which unfortunately succumbed to rot and did not endure the test of time. Our client sought a new design that combined aesthetically pleasing yet durable materials with low-maintenance planting, creating a naturalistic and colourful ambiance.

Key elements included a dining area that capitalized on the stunning views, an outdoor kitchen for culinary adventures, and a cosy lounge seating area for relaxation. Careful consideration was given to the lighting design, ensuring that it would enhance the ambiance without overpowering the breathtaking city skyline.

Preparation and Build

Access to the rooftop terrace was thoughtfully designed through a staircase skylight, creating a natural division in the space and leading to a secluded nook. To enhance comfort in this area, we crafted a high-backed corner bench that offers not only a cosy seating option but also wind shelter for evening gatherings.

The main open area was reimagined through geometric planter beds, echoing the angular shapes of nearby city buildings. These beds are filled with structural evergreen plants such as Pinus cloud trees, complemented by colourful nectar-rich flowers like Salvia and Scabiosa. The perimeter of the main planter beds features hardwood edging with an elevated profile, offering additional seating for social events and gatherings.

For the main surface, we selected composite timber-effect decking as a practical and durable solution to withstand the elements. The choice of Millboard Limed Oak adds a light yet subtle finish that beautifully complements the real hardwood elsewhere in the garden. As the space unfolds, the decking changes direction to delineate the main dining and entertaining area from the cosier lounge seating area, enhancing both functionality and flow.

Planting

The planting design plays a crucial role in cultivating an established feel for the rooftop garden, contributing to its overall aesthetic while attracting local wildlife. By carefully selecting a combination of evergreen plants and vibrant flowering species, we created a lush environment that softens the space and enhances relaxation.

The diverse planting palette not only adds colour and texture but also promotes biodiversity, ensuring the garden becomes a sanctuary for various insects and pollinators. As the garden matures, this planting will contribute to the overall ambiance, giving the owners a sense of a thriving, well-established garden in the heart of the city.

Subtle lighting was strategically incorporated to extend the usability of the rooftop garden into the evenings, creating a welcoming atmosphere that transforms the space as the sun sets. This design approach ensures that the rooftop oasis remains a peaceful retreat, providing a perfect escape from the bustling world below.
