Perched high above the rhythm and rush of London, with uninterrupted views sweeping along the River Thames towards the unmistakable silhouette of Tower Bridge, this once-barren roof terrace has been reimagined as something far more evocative than mere outdoor space—it is now a destination in its own right.
Design
What was once an exposed and underutilised expanse has been transformed into a layered, immersive retreat—an elevated garden that blurs the boundary between architecture and nature. Designed for both quiet moments and lively gatherings, the terrace now unfolds as a sequence of spaces, each carefully composed to balance openness with intimacy.
At its heart sits an outdoor kitchen tailored for the passionate cook. This is not simply a place to prepare food, but a stage for experimentation—where freshly picked herbs from surrounding planters are harvested for dinner and cocktails. The layout has been designed to give each area of the roof terrace its own unique feel and purpose. From morning coffee and work calls on the terrace, to long afternoons cooking dinner with friends, this outdoor space is equally as special for individual moments with a book as it is for gathering friends and family on special occasions.
A balcony side bar is positioned at both the front and rear of the ‘L’ shaped terrace allowing practical use for working outside throughout the day and the ability to follow the sun or enjoy the sunset.
Beyond, a more relaxed rhythm takes over. A generous lounge and dining area is subtly divided by bespoke feature panels, delicately clothed in climbing jasmine. These panels do more than define space—they temper the breeze that sweeps in from the river and, as dusk settles, release a soft, heady fragrance that lingers in the warm evening air. It is here, on balmy summer nights, that the terrace truly comes into its own.
Preparation and Build
Our teams are well versed with the constraints and challenges of removing and delivering materials to rooftops. Having an exceptional team is also paramount to the operational etiquette of working in a shared use building and liaising with our clients, neighbours and building management.
Materials were partly delivered via hoist where possible and through the communal staircase. We worked to construct the composite deck system in sections to allow smooth access to all working areas and a methodical approach to ongoing deliveries of planters, furniture and other building materials.
An automated irrigation system, electrics and lighting were all carefully routed and concealed beneath the framework with access points in the decking for maintenance.
Planting
Planting is abundant yet intentional, drawing in birds, butterflies and pollinators and creating a sense of sanctuary high above the activity of buzz of the Thames. Despite the exposed position, planting has been carefully chosen not only to thrive in a range of challenging growing conditions including strong winds and beating sun, the effect is immersive: a feeling of being enveloped by greenery while still connected to the urban panorama beyond.
Feature trees and shrubs such as cloud pine trees and olives give structure and definition as well as adding dramatic effect when up lit at night. Santolina (Cotton Lavender) provides robust silver foliage as well as a welcome splash of colour in often the hottest part of summer.
